Zune Pass

I have a Zune. I bought a 30 day subscription to download unlimited amounts of music for 30 days for about $15. The music will stop working after the 30 days are over, but I’m having a ton of fun checking out some albums I’ve been wanting to for a while or have owned in the past and either had them stolen from me or lost the digital copy I had on my hardrive that crashed. I’m bored, so I’ll list the albums I’ve downloaded so far and for some fun audience participation, I would like some suggestions from you!

Stuff I’ve dowloaded so far…

Artist/Album name:

…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead: So Divided

As Tall As Lions: Lafcadio, Into The Flood

Augustana: Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt

The Bravery: The Sun and the Moon

Ben Kweller: On My Way

Colbie Caillat: Coco

Coldplay: Parachutes

Copeland: Dressed Up & In Line

Danielson: Tri-Danielson!!! (The video for rubbernecker was brilliant), Ships

Joshua Redman Elastic Band: Momentum

Joy Division: Unknown Pleasures

Kanye West: Graduation

Keane: Somewhere Only We Know (EP w/B-sides)

The Killers: Sawdust

Minus The Bear: Planet Of Ice

Muse: Black Holes and Revelations

The New Amsterdams: At the Foot of My Rival, Story Like a Scar

Of Montreal: Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?

The Perishers: Victorious

The Police: Outlandos D’Amour

The Postmarks: The Postmarks

Queen: Classic Queen

Radiohead: Hail To the Thief

The Rocket Summer: Do You Feel

The Shins: Chutes Too Narrow

Simon & Garfunkel: Greatest Hits

Smoosh: Free To Stay

The Strokes: First Impressions of Earth

The Terrible Twos: Jerzy The Giant

Thrice: The Alchemy Index Vols. 1-4, Vheissu

The Ting Tings: We Started Nothing

U2: War (Deluxe ver. 2008)

That should give at least a clue of the type of music that I am into…but I’m looking to branch out. Give me some suggestions, I’m open to them…unless it’s country or nu metal, in which case if you suggest that to me then you should punch yourself in the pee pee.

**Just added*

The National, Boxer

**Downloaded by your recommendations**

The Smiths, Louder Than Bombs — Although any songs involving Morrissey are unavailable.

You got a pretty good list going so far. I think theres some you could tweak and some I can add, so let’s start with my short commentary on your long list.

…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead: So Divided
*I’m not too familiar with this band (or fragment sentence). Shall we move on?*

As Tall As Lions: Lafcadio, Into The Flood
*Maybe this is a Jars of Clay cover band.*

    Augustana: Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt
*We’re really not off to a good start. Maybe it’s because I’ve never heard this or maybe it’s because it sucks. We’ll never know.*

The Bravery: The Sun and the Moon
*This band is not really my thing. You know when you scan a list of things and only the familiar stuff or the stuff you like stands out?*

    Ben Kweller: On My Way
Okay, finally an artist I can comment on. I don’t like Ben Kweller in the least. Please bear with me, I won’t be negative or ignorant about all of this.*

    Colbie Caillat: Coco
    *Condolences: Can’t Comment.*

    Coldplay: Parachutes
*This album is classic. I absolutely love it. Sadly, they only get worse from here, though the next two aren’t that bad.*

Copeland: Dressed Up & In Line
*I don’t like his voice or songs.*

Danielson: Tri-Danielson!!! (The video for rubbernecker was brilliant), Ships
*When Danielson was in their prime, I didn’t really get their music. Listening now and looking back I realize how good this stuff really is. My only recommendation is to get more of it.*

Death Cab For Cutie: Narrow Stairs
*I haven’t heard too much of this one, but what I have heard pales in comparison to some of their other albums. Get Transatlanticism and The Photo Album immediately. You don’t have to thank me right away, though.*

    Hot Hot Heat: Happiness Ltd.
*Meh, this isn’t too great. I guess it’s not bad, but just kind of meh.*

Jack Johnson: Sleep Through The Static

    Joshua Redman Elastic Band: Momentum
*Some Jazz. Pretty good jazz, at that.*

    Joy Division: Unknown Pleasures
*Great band. One of the few good 80’s bands.*

    Kanye West: Graduation
*It got good reviews. Nevertheless, he has a big ego that shows through his music. It’s hard for me to get by that.*

Keane: Somewhere Only We Know (EP w/B-sides)
    *Girly.*

    The Killers: Sawdust
    *Dumb.*

Minus The Bear: Planet Of Ice
*Good band. I like the album Menos el Oso the best. Go get it and listen to “The Pig War”.

    Muse: Black Holes and Revelations
*Good band. Get the album Absolution and listen to it. It’s quite a but different, and probably better, though both are quite good.*

The New Amsterdams: At the Foot of My Rival, Story Like a Scar
*I’ve heard of them. That’s kind of like hearing them.*

Of Montreal: Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
*One of the greatest albums of the decade.*

    The Perishers: Victorious
*Don’t know much about this band. What I do know is the album name is ironic when paired with the band name.*

    The Police: Outlandos D’Amour
*I prefer their earlier stuff like Reggatta De Blanc and Zenyatta Mondatta.*

    The Postmarks: The Postmarks
    *The Premegans: The Premegans.*

    Queen: Classic Queen
*I dont like greatest hits type albums much so go get A Night at the Opera. Freddie Mercury has one of the greatest voices in rock history.*

    Radiohead: Hail To the Thief
*One of my favorite bands, but one of their more mediocre albums. My favorite is Kid A, followed by OK computer and In Rainbows. Also check out Thom Yorke’s solo album The Eraser.*

The Rocket Summer: Do You Feel
    *I’m unfamiliar with them.*

    The Shins: Chutes Too Narrow
*Pretty good band. So Says I is a much better album.*

    Simon & Garfunkel: Greatest Hits
*Great music. Again, I’d go with a true album instead of a greatest hits. Thankfully Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme is basically a greatest hits album and is quite amazing.*

    Smoosh: Free To Stay
*Isn’t this that band of 2 twelve year old girls? Haha, yeah, 6 years ago. Catchy stuff, though, but not too deep.*

The Strokes: First Impressions of Earth
*Pretty good I guess. I never got much into them. I have heard by their fans that Room on Fire is a classic album, though.*

Tegan & Sara: So Jealous, The Con
    *Don’t care for them much.*

The Terrible Twos: Jerzy The Giant
    *???*

Thrice: The Alchemy Index Vols. 1-4, Vheissu
*I used to like them in high school but don’t really anymore. I don’t care much for screaming.*

The Ting Tings: We Started Nothing
    *You started a band.*

    U2: War (Deluxe ver. 2008)
*The only good U2 album (besides Boy) and one of the greatest albums of all time.*

Okay, that wasn’t much help, but hopefully you look pass some of my naysaying and download some of the stuff I’ve recommended already. Now for the rest of it.

Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon
*Listen to this one all the way through. It truly is the greatest complete album ever made.*

    Arcade Fire: Neon Bible
*This is a new instant classic. Their first album, Funeral, is also great. I can see Arcade Fire as being one of the great bands of our time, not because I can see the future, but because I can see the present.*

    John Coltrane: Giant Steps
*Arguably the greatest jazz album of all time. I can’t argue, though, as I’m not very well read when it comes to jazz, but this album is truly incredible. For some good early Coltrane, try Blue Train, and for some later, more experimental work, try Sun Ship.*

    Animal Collective: Feels
*This is one you may have to listen to a few times, but after you get past its uniqueness, you will be thankful that you found the great sound known as Animal Collective. On a related note, try Panda Bear: Person Pitch. It’s the solo album by their drummer, but thankfully, not a drum solo. It has a vocal sound reminiscent of the Beach Boys’ front man Brian Wilson.*

    The Beach Boys: Pet Sounds
*Forget the cheesy sound of early Beach Boys and listen to this all the way through. Beautiful.*

    The Smiths: Louder Than Bombs
*Another of the great albums of the great bands of the 80’s.*

The Cure: The Head on the Door
*Another of the great albums of the great bands of the 80’s.*

    Beirut: Elephant Gun
*Very interesting and beautiful songwriting. You’ll like this album if you like good things.*

The Beatles: [Rubber Soul and everything after that]
*I’m not saying you don’t know what the Beatles sound like, I just couldn’t leave the greatest band in history off the list. You should probably listen to them more. So should I.*

I’ve gotten carried away a bit. Get these albums and I’ll perhaps get some more recommendations up here. Sadly, I haven’t been discovering much new music lately, but I still have more I can post if you like.

Thanks Grant. I’m glad you mentioned some of the more classic bands on your recommendation list, I was hoping you would. A few things, unfortunately the Beatles aren’t for sale yet on most mp3 stores. On the list I made, if it seems like a lot of those cd’s have just the latest cd is because I already own their older stuff (such as Muse and Death Cab).

I’ll make a list at the bottom of mine of music recommended by friends that I am checking out. Thanks, man!

What’s a whole album sound like?- Nish

Good? I’m not quite sure what you’re asking, Nish. What does the quality sound like or something?
